IT CAN HAPPEN . . . a reminder - Parvo in Puppies

I hesitated at posting this message to all my friends who’s lives are so integrated with their pets. But after finally having an uninterrupted sleep I realized this is an important reminder to all of us.

Our little angel Pearl is home after 5 days living on the edge after contracting parvo virus, YES parvo.

Here is a 13 week old healthy, extremely active puppy nearly 2 weeks post her 2nd vaccination. Her lifestyle is such that she had very 4 limited exposures outside of her backyard and here we are.

Tuesday totally normal, Wednesday lethargic and gradually increasing loose stools with a parvo infection being at the bottom of the list of explanations givenher vaccination status. Saturday the positive diagnosis which by this time Pearl had been at emergency care on IV for 24 hrs.

Next to zero white cells, vomiting and literally not eating for 5 days. All who know and love this young spirit were praying for her to pull through.

We finally got the call from her emergency care last night telling usshe was ready to come home. Home she is, tothe love and continued support she will need for complete recovery.

My very deepest thanks to Colleen Tinlin, Candice Tinlin, Gail Coady, Tara Flieler Bj Parsons Brett Cain Sue Johnson, Kathy Heerwald for their prayers and support through the most emotional and stressful time we’ve had in years.

Most of all I forever indebted to my good friends and breeders Lynda Chase and David Otlewski who were ALWAYS at the end of the line to share in our struggle with support, advice and most of all prayers for their girl. They are the hallmark of what breeders should be.

Finally without the compassionate and expert care provided by the staff Kingston Regional Pet Hospital our Pearl would not be with us today. We are fortunate to be able to afford a nearly $9,000 bill, clearly not everyone has the finances to do so.

NEVER GET COMPLACENT thinking your puppy is safe. Be diligent and be cognizant of the potential risks, they are out there!
