Had to share this - a GREAT READ!
Melinda Ann Benbow is with Bj Parsons and 4 others on FaceBook – 15 Jul 2025:
One of my absolute favorite parts of owning an English Setter is getting to watch them do what they were bred to do—hunt.
If you've never taken your Setter into the field, I promise you're not alone. Many owners start with no background in hunting or field trials, and that’s exactly why I want to share just how welcoming and supportive the English Setter community is.
English Setters thrive when they’re given a chance to use their nose and work the field. Whether you're out for wild birds, training with pen-raised quail, or entering a field event, the joy on their faces says it all. It’s not about being perfect or even having experience—it’s about sharing an instinctive, enriching activity with your dog in a safe, facilitated way.
If you’ve been curious or looking for a sign, consider this it: We’d love to see more English Setters out in the field. No matter if your Setter comes from a bench, field, or dual background—this sport is for all of them.
And if you want a chance to see it in action or dip your toes in, mark your calendar for the English Setter Association of America’s Field Championship this December 8–9 at Munroc Farm in Paris, KY. It’s a beautiful way to connect with other Setter folks, learn, and cheer these dogs on.
Got questions about how to get started or want to join a training day sometime? Just reach out—the field committee would be happy to help!
Let’s show the world what these beautiful dogs were born to do.
